Two white cotton shirts come out of the same wash, hang in the same closet, and get worn on the same rotation. A year later one still looks like a white shirt and the other has gone stiff and buttery yellow under both arms, with a crust you can feel through the fabric. The person wearing them did not sweat more on Tuesdays. What changed was the tube on the bathroom shelf.
Most people file this under perspiration and treat it as a hygiene problem, which is why the usual fixes fail. Sweat by itself rinses out. The yellow patch that will not shift is a mineral deposit that your antiperspirant put there on purpose, and the fix has to start from that.
The stain shows up long after the deposit does
Nothing looks wrong for the first few months. An aluminum salt is applied to skin, it meets moisture, and it forms a plug in the sweat duct. That is the entire point of the product. Some of that same material transfers to whatever the skin is touching, which is the inside of a sleeve, and it stays there through a normal wash because it was designed to be difficult to dissolve.
Each wear adds a little more. Each wash leaves most of it in place. The fabric under the arm slowly gains a layer that is not fabric, which is why the finished stain is stiff before it is yellow. Run a thumbnail across a bad underarm and you can hear it. That crunch is the deposit, and the color arrives later, once oils trapped inside it have had time to age.
The delay is what makes this easy to misdiagnose. By the time the mark shows, the material causing it has been building for months, and washing the shirt harder now cannot reach back and undo that.
A drug monograph decides what goes on your sleeve
In the United States an antiperspirant is not a cosmetic. It is regulated as an over-the-counter drug under 21 CFR Part 350, whose final monograph was published in June 2003, and the definition in that part is one sentence long: a drug product applied topically that reduces the production of perspiration at that site. A stick that only handles odor is a different category of product and will not carry a Drug Facts panel at all.
The same part lists exactly which active ingredients are permitted and how much of each. Aluminum chlorohydrate is allowed up to twenty five percent. The aluminum zirconium compounds, the ones marketed as clinical or extra strength, are allowed up to twenty percent. Aluminum chloride in a water solution tops out at fifteen percent. Those are not trace amounts hiding in a fragrance, they are the largest single component of what you are spreading on the skin that a shirt is about to touch.
Read your own tube before you blame your laundry. The percentage sits on the Drug Facts panel next to the ingredient name, and it predicts how fast a light shirt turns.

Skin oil is the other half of the reaction
Aluminum salts on their own are close to colorless. The yellow needs a second ingredient, and your own skin supplies it. Underarm skin produces sebum as well as water, and sebum contains fatty acids that oxidize slowly when they are held against a fiber and exposed to air, heat, and light. The mineral layer is what holds them there.
That partnership explains a pattern people notice and cannot account for. The heaviest sweater in the world will not yellow at the underarm if it is wool worn over a shirt, because the mineral never reaches it. A thin cotton undershirt worn against bare skin every day yellows fastest of anything you own. Absorbency plus direct contact plus a daily application is the worst case, and it is exactly what most people put closest to the source.
It also explains the color. You are not looking at dirt but at aged oil locked into a scaffold that ordinary detergent cannot take apart.
Eight wash routines, measured rather than guessed
Somebody tested this properly. A 2017 paper in IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering by H. Acikgoz Tufan, I. Gocek, U. K. Sahin and I. Erdem, titled A novel washing algorithm for underarm stain removal, built the stain deliberately. The researchers applied commercial antiperspirants along with a synthetic sweat solution to fabric, then ran eight different washing procedures that varied in temperature, detergent quantity, and pretreatment, and scored the results with tristimulus values rather than opinion.
The framing of that work is the useful part for anyone standing at a machine. The paper describes aluminum chloride and its compounds as forming a gel-like structure whose solubility in water is very poor, which is a fair summary of why a normal cycle does nothing. The variable that moved the score was the routine, not the detergent brand, and pretreatment was part of every routine that worked.
Heat is the step that makes it permanent
Two habits turn a removable deposit into a fixture. The first is a hot wash on a shirt that is already marked, which bakes the oil into the mineral instead of floating it out. The second is chlorine bleach, the reflex most people reach for on a white shirt, which can deepen the yellow rather than lift it and leaves you with a shirt that is worse and also weaker at the seams.
A tumble dryer finishes the job, giving any surviving stain a second heat treatment on the way to the drawer. If a shirt still shows a shadow after washing, hang it to dry rather than putting it in the drum.
Change the order of operations on your next white shirt
Prevention costs nothing and works, because everything above depends on the mineral reaching the cloth. Let the product dry completely before a sleeve touches it, which for most sticks is a couple of minutes rather than the four seconds people actually give it. Use less of it, since the ceiling on the panel is a maximum and not a dosing instruction. If you own shirts you care about, keep the strongest formula for the days you wear something dark or something you already expect to retire.
For a shirt that is marked but not stiff yet, pretreat before it goes anywhere near the machine. Wet the underarm, work in a detergent or an enzyme-based prewash, and let it sit while you load the rest. Wash it warm rather than hot, skip chlorine bleach entirely, and check the shirt while it is still damp, because a dried stain tells you nothing about whether the cycle helped.
Then do the honest part. Pick your three favorite light-colored shirts, turn them inside out under a lamp tonight, and rank them by how stiff the underarm feels rather than how yellow it looks. The stiffest one is the one whose clock is furthest along, and it is the shirt where changing your routine this week actually buys you something.
